PTE Academic: Complete Preparation Guide for Beginners

What is PTE Academic?

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is a computer-based English language test accepted by all Australian universities and the Department of Home Affairs for visa applications. It tests your speaking, writing, reading and listening skills in a single 2-hour session.

Test format overview

  • Speaking & Writing (54–67 minutes): Read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, re-tell lecture, answer short question, summarise written text, essay
  • Reading (29–30 minutes): Multiple choice, re-order paragraphs, fill in the blanks
  • Listening (30–43 minutes): Summarise spoken text, multiple choice, fill in the blanks, highlight correct summary, select missing word, highlight incorrect words, write from dictation
  • Scoring

PTE scores range from 10 to 90. Here's how they map to university requirements:

  • PTE 50 (≈ IELTS 6.0): minimum for most undergraduate programs
  • PTE 58 (≈ IELTS 6.5): common postgraduate requirement
  • PTE 65 (≈ IELTS 7.0): required for competitive programs and some professional courses
  • Top preparation strategies

    1. Master "Read Aloud"

Read Aloud contributes to both your reading and speaking scores. Practice reading academic sentences at a natural pace with clear pronunciation. Record yourself and listen back. Focus on word stress and sentence intonation.

    2. Practice "Write from Dictation" obsessively

This task contributes heavily to your writing and listening scores. You hear a sentence once and must type it exactly. Practice with dictation exercises daily. This single task can significantly boost your overall score.

    3. Use official PTE practice tests

Pearson offers scored practice tests that simulate the real exam. Take at least 2 scored practice tests before your real test to understand your strengths and weaknesses.

    4. Improve your typing speed

PTE is entirely computer-based. If you type slowly, you'll run out of time in the writing sections. Aim for at least 40 words per minute. Use free typing practice websites to build speed.

    5. Don't pause too long in Speaking

The microphone auto-detects silence. If you pause for more than 3 seconds, it will move to the next question. Practice maintaining a steady flow of speech, even if you need to use filler phrases like "let me think about this" while gathering your thoughts.
